A combined WA EMD WECCWG (https://www.mil.wa.gov/weccwg) & FEMA RECCWG meeting will be held in Vancouver, WA, this coming February. The WECCWG part of the two-day meeting will focus on both volcanoes and amateur radio. The organizers are very interested in a HamWAN demo, and this will be a fairly high profile ESF #2 audience. Larch Mountain is line-of-sight from the Vancouver Readiness Center venue. Two demonstration possibilities come to mind, a live video feed (perhaps with Camp Murray) plus sharing a desktop to show dragging and dropping an ICS-213 form between agencies. Does anyone have any other ideas for things to demonstrate which would emphasize emergency communications capability via HamWAN? Would anyone like to help? Obviously, we will want to practice this in advance. Steve

Can Nigel or Bart or another on the core HamWAN team comment on the status of the WA EMD setup? I believe the site has been evaluated, and some (all) equipment has been purchased, but nothing is installed and they are not yet on HamWAN. This event in February seems to be a strong motivator to get that project moving. Perhaps there is someone on this list that is adequately connected at Camp Murray to poke whomever needs to be poked to get this moving? I see this February meeting and demo as an outstanding opportunity to expand the presence and use of HamWAN between emergency management functions. I know that Snohomish County and Seattle EOC are both on it, and both have VOIP phones on a HamWAN based PBX (totally independent of external internet). That capability absolutely needs to grow. While demonstrating other amateur radio capabilities, such as APRS, is always something we should look for opportunities to do, we should also be careful not to dilute the potential to strongly promote HamWAN at the February meeting, given the already expressed interest in it. Camp Murray has purchased nearly all of the equipment. Bart provided a list of missing items that would need to be procured before installation. I've been CC'd on a few follow-ups to this and none have received a response from Camp Murray. In the latest, HamWAN offered to procure the missing pieces to speed up the process. No response. Tom

How about a live APRS feed from each area to the other, showing mobiles running around. Manually place objects/items on the APRS map and show them appearing on maps at the other end. Can also do APRS messaging between the stations. I'm not talking about sharing screens across HamWAN, but having two APRS programs running, one at each end. I know the above would be a low bandwidth demo, but emergency uses for it are potentially high. Particularly the placement of objects showing where resources are located and moving them on the map manually as they are deployed. -- Curt, WE7U. http://we7u.wetnet.net APRS Usage Pages: http://we7u.wetnet.net/usage.html Coordinate Converter (Android): http://www.sarguydigital.com
I’ve copied the Seattle ACS leadership and technical team on this. I suspect we would be amenable to playing a role in assisting in the HamWAN demo for this EmComm focused event. Potentially we could stand up a video conference to the Seattle EOC. Or as John mentioned, we have several IP Phones and could organize a conference call over VoIP with a few sites in Seattle. By February, perhaps we could get Camp Murray stood up and they could participate. With some pre-arrangement and coordination with FEMA X, we could deploy a portable HamWAN node at the FEMA Region X facility in Bothel as part of the demo.
